Description of the Artwork

Time With Mom is an exquisite panoramic-format masterwork by one of America's most revered realists, Steve Hanks. This deeply tender composition focuses on a quiet, intimate moment of connection between a mother and child, a frequent and celebrated theme in Hanks’ oeuvre. The scene is defined by its atmospheric warmth, where light filters gracefully into the room, dancing across fabrics, highlighting textures, and casting soft shadows that give the space a tactile presence. Through his self-defined style of "emotional realism," Hanks elevates a simple domestic scene into a profound, universal meditation on security, parental devotion, and the fleeting beauty of youth.

Artist Biography

Steve Hanks (1949–2015) is widely regarded as one of the finest watercolorists and American contemporary realists of the late 20th century. Born in San Diego, California, Hanks spent his early life closely connected to the ocean before formalizing his training at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Rejecting cold abstraction, Hanks developed a style he coined "emotional realism," using highly detailed, complex play of sunlight, textures, and drapery to mirror internal human emotions.

Throughout his brilliant career, Hanks earned top honors including the National Watercolor Society Merit Award and the National Academy of Western Art Gold Medal. He remains globally recognized for his unparalleled ability to capture the profound psychological depths of family life, childhood innocence, and the human form.
