Artist Biography
Ramona Batsford Bendin (1924–2013) was a prominent New York-born oil painter who spent her later career working in coastal North Carolina. The daughter of cartoonist Ben Batsford—noted for inking the 1920s comic strip Little Annie Rooney as well as Edgar Bergen’s Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd—she studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, the School of Visual Arts, and the Art Students League in NYC.
Painting in oil for over 50 years, Bendin frequently incorporated water, coastal marshlands, and sporting themes into her work. She utilized a signature technique of underpainting with transparent iron yellow oxide on a limited palette, giving her paintings a characteristic luminous glow. Bendin taught workshops at the Sunset River Marketplace art gallery in Calabash, NC, and held memberships in the American Artists Professional League, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Wilmington Art Association, the Waterway Art Association, and the Associated Artists of Southport.
