Description of the Artwork

A Day to Remember is a masterful example of Les Ray’s "Spectacle Paintings"—large-scale, panoramic narratives that serve as a vibrant collage of American life at the turn of the century. This particular work is a celebration of nostalgia, meticulously researched to capture the architectural details, fashions, and social atmosphere of a bygone era.

The horizontal, cinematic format allows the viewer’s eye to wander through multiple vignettes, discovering humor and warmth in the faces of the humble, hard-working people Ray spent his life documenting. Published by the esteemed Somerset House, this lithograph features exceptional color depth and clarity, preserved perfectly on archival-grade paper.

Artist Bio: Les Ray

Les Ray is a celebrated American realist whose work acts as a journey into a nostalgic "yesteryear." Raised in Saugus, California, during the 1930s and 40s, Ray’s childhood was steeped in the imagery of the Old West and rural railroad life. A self-taught artist, he developed his technique while serving in Japan and Korea, often sketching portraits for his fellow soldiers.

Ray is best known for his ability to find humor and humanity in everyday situations. His "Spectacle Paintings" are his most ambitious works, requiring extensive historical research to ensure every detail—from the steam engines to the general stores—is historically accurate. His art serves as a tribute to the "humble Americans who made this country great."
