Artwork Description
"In the Eyes of the Innocent" is a deeply moving and technically profound work by the master of modern watercolor, Steve Hanks. Published in 2000, this limited edition lithograph exemplifies Hanks’ ability to capture the complex emotional landscapes of family life.
The painting depicts a mother cradling her child, but the focus is uniquely shifted toward the profound connection in their gaze and the delicate play of light across their forms. Hanks, who often described his work as "emotional realism," used his own experiences as a father to inform the scene. The composition is celebrated for its intricate "patterns of light"—a hallmark of Hanks' style—where the sunlight filtering through a window creates a lattice of shadows and highlights that dance across the skin and fabric. It is a timeless tribute to unconditional love and the purity of childhood.

Artist Bio: Steve Hanks
Steve Hanks was widely regarded as one of the best watercolor artists in the world. His paintings often attained a level of detail and luminosity that challenged the traditional boundaries of the medium. After studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and the California College of Arts and Crafts, Hanks spent years perfecting a technique he called "introspective realism."
Throughout his career, he was consistently ranked among the top ten artists in America by U.S. Art Magazine and was a frequent winner of the National Watercolor Society’s "Best of Show." Following his passing in 2015, the demand for his limited edition prints—particularly those focusing on the tender moments of motherhood and the domestic life—has increased significantly, as no new hand-signed editions will ever be produced again.
