Available via Private Consignment: March 2026

The Work

"Thunder Speaks" is a masterwork of atmospheric storytelling by the "Storyteller of the Native American people," Howard Terpning. Inspired by a research trip across the plains of Montana, the piece captures a dramatic shift in the landscape as an ominous storm develops. Terpning’s ability to render the tension between the physical environment and the spiritual reverence of the riders is unparalleled. This 2002 release is a fine art paper giclée, produced via state-of-the-art ink-jet technology by the renowned Litho-Krome Company. This process was specifically chosen to replicate the subtle nuances and "deckled edge" elegance of Terpning’s original gouache painting.

Artist Bio: Howard Terpning

Howard Terpning (b. 1927) is widely considered the most lauded painter of Western art alive today. A member of the Cowboy Artists of America and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Autry Museum, Terpning’s work transcends the "Western" genre to be recognized as world-class fine art. After a legendary career in commercial illustration—where he created posters for classics like The Sound of Music and Gone with the Wind—he dedicated his life to chronicling the Plains Indian culture. His works are held in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Eiteljorg Museum. Terpning is often referred to as a "national treasure," and his secondary market remains one of the most robust in the art world.
