Artist Bio
The Art of the Storyteller
Tom duBois (pronounced doo-BWAH) is an artist of rare versatility, a true "Renaissance man" who has bridged the gap between popular commercial culture and the world of high-fidelity fine art. Renowned for his meticulous research and a style that transforms the realistic into the fantastic, duBois’ work is defined by its ability to see the world "through a child's eyes"—an ethos inspired by his favorite Picasso quote: "Every child is an artist; the problem is remaining a child once you grow up."
From Commercial Giants to Fine Art
A graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago, duBois began his career with a whirlwind of high-profile commercial projects. Before he was a staple in fine art galleries, he was the hand behind some of the most iconic pop-culture imagery of the 80s and 90s, including legendary video game box art for Konami (titles like Castlevania and Contra) and branding for companies like Disney, McDonald's, and Quaker Oats.
The Disney Discovery Collection
Tom’s rise to international fame in the fine art world was propelled by his work on the Disney Discovery Collection. This series of five paintings—featuring Snow White, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, and Cinderella—astounded collectors with its complexity. These weren't just portraits; they were visual treasure hunts, hidden with characters and artifacts from the films that rewarded viewers for every moment spent looking.
Epics of Faith: The Noah’s Ark & Religious Series
Perhaps duBois’ most enduring legacy is his deeply personal religious and biblical series. His Noah’s Ark collection (The Commission, The Invitation, The Promise, and The Celebration) showcased his legendary attention to detail. To ensure authenticity, Tom:
-
Sewed original costumes for his models to wear.
-
Traveled to zoos in San Diego, Chicago, and Los Angeles to sketch animals from life.
-
Researched biblical history extensively to bring a sense of weight and realism to the miraculous.
His masterpiece, Hosanna, depicting Christ’s entry into Jerusalem, remains one of the most admired religious works in contemporary art, celebrated for its vibrant light and emotional depth.
A Multi-Sensory Creator
Beyond the canvas, Tom is a poet, singer, and storyteller. It is not uncommon for him to appear at gallery signings with his acoustic guitar, performing original songs that complement the themes of his paintings. This multi-disciplinary approach allows him to "capture the whole story," ensuring that every piece of art is not just a picture, but an immersive experience.
Today, Tom duBois continues to create works that inspire a sense of wonder, reminding us all that the world is far more magical—and far more beautiful—than we often remember.
